Inappropriate behaviour

What is inappropriate behaviour at work?

This is currently a topical question. However, there is no easy answer.

Inappropriate behaviour at work falls into two categories:

  • It is against the ‘rules’; where the employer has given clear guidance about conduct
  • It is perceived as inappropriate or offensive by some colleagues

In the vast majority of work settings, employees find their own level of appropriate behaviour which works for them all. However, if someone in the workplace does not like the behaviour and finds it upsetting, employers must take this seriously.

Many employers are tempted to ignore it but left unaddressed. This could cause problems. In general, it is sufficient to point out what is causing offence and ask for the behaviour to stop. If it does not, this becomes a disciplinary issue.
